Following the collapsed three storey building located on 29b Oloto St, off Cemetery Road, that left many trapped-in on Thursday, Residents of Ebute Meta, yesterday wept uncontrollably
as the rescuers identify no fewer than eight people dead.
Among the dead in the Lagos building were a pregnant woman and a baby. Two other women and three men also perished as a result of the collapse. Another seven people were plucked from the rubble alive.
While speaking with newsmen, one of the rescued residents of the ill- fated building who identified herself as Dalikis Abdulamid said she was on the balcony of the second floor when the building came down on its own.
The 23 year old lady who was seen praising God for his mercies at the scene of the collapse said she was happy because her mother and her four siblings were also rescued alive from the collapsed building.
She said, “I am happy because my mother and, brothers and sisters are alive. We all survived it. They have been taken to hospital for treatment. We did not know that the building will collapse. By about 2:00 a.m. when the building collapsed, some of our co-tenants were trapped, while some were dead.
“We have been noticing cracks in the walls of our rooms, but my father used to patch these up with cement. We have paid the landlord money upfront and he will not refund the rent to us again. So we were still leaving in the building”.
A trader named Chukwudi Ezeobi told our correspondent that eight persons have been removed from the building dead, and said that the victims include a pregnant woman and seven persons.
Ezeobi added that the ground floor of the building was used by traders for motorcycle warehouse, while the first, second and third floors house the tenants.
The embittered trader said he has about 200 Honda motorcycles, valued at about N20 million inside the building before it was reduced to rubbles.
Still counting loses Mr. Ambrose Aneke lamented that he has about 100 cartons of motorcycles spare parts, valued at about N3 million in the building.
