Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has been named the new captain of the Dutch national side. Van Persie, 30, has replaced Wesley Sneijder as Louis van Gaal's skipper as the Galatasaray midfielder is said to be in bad shape.
The Red Devils forward captained former side Arsenal throughout the 2011/12 season so the Dutchman already has leadership experience.
Van Gaal confirmed that the door is open for former Manchester United target Wesley Sneijder to return to the national side - on the proviso Sneijder sheds a few pounds.
"He is not out of sight, but he must first get in shape. Then he will probably play with his qualities," Van Gaal told reporters.
Van Persie will have the honour of wearing the captain's armband next week when Holland take on Portugal in the Algarve.
Last season's top scorer is likely to take part in Rio Ferdinand's testimonial against Sevilla tonight - before appearing at Wembley on Sunday for United's Community Shield match against Wigan Athletic.
