FIFA Under17 World Cup: Nigeria thrash Iraq 5-0 to clinch top spot, advance to Next Round

The Golden Eaglets of Nigeria thrashed the Iraq U17 side 5-0 to establish their authority in group F and finish as group winners at the Rashid stadium on Friday 25 October 2013.
After the 6-1 mauling of defending Champions Mexico in the opening fixture, the Eaglets had to come from behind to earn a point against Sweden in their second group F tie.
Putting the disappointing result against Sweden behind, the Manu Garba led side returned to free scoring display against the boys from Iraq with goals from Musa Mohammed from the spot in the 4th minute before Nwakali made 2-0 moments later.
Yahaya’s brace in the 17th and 41st minutes handed the Nigerians a comfortable 4-0 lead before the break before a late strike in the second half by 15-year old Cjigozie Obasi sealed the 5-0 victory.
Second half
After the break, Iraq started on the front foot forcing the Eaglets to concede an early corner and soon went close to reducing the deficit inside the opening six minutes of the second half with a header on target off a fantastic cross.
The three-time U17 Champions soon settled in and should have made it five three minutes later but Awoniyi’s effort was denied by the wood works.
Iraq again came close to scoring in the 68th minute but a superb save from Alanpasu denied Resan the chance to get on the score sheet.
Awoniyi got a chance to get on the score sheet for after being released inside the area by Yahaya but the combative forward could not keep his cool to convert the chance as his shot went over the cross bar.
Alanpasu was again called to action inside the final five minutes with an excellent double save after the Iraqis pounced on the rebounds as the Nigerians failed to clears their lines but Substitute Chigozie Obasi made it 5-0 right on the 90th minute mark to hand Nigeria a comfortable win.
Nigeria finish top of group F with seven points from three games, one point above defending Champions Mexico who defeated Sweden 1-0 in the other group F fixture.
The 4-0 victory also means Nigeria progress to the next round with a massive goal difference of ten after scoring 14 and conceding four.
